Accessible website basics to include in design and development

Practical accessibility checks that belong in the project workflow, not just at launch.

## Treat accessibility as a shared requirement Accessibility affects design, content, development, and ongoing maintenance. Establish expectations at project kickoff and identify the standards or jurisdictional requirements relevant to your organization with qualified advice. A checklist or automated scan can identify some issues but cannot certify that a site works for everyone. Include people with disabilities in research and testing where possible.

## Structure pages meaningfully Use headings in a logical order, landmarks appropriately, and descriptive labels for form controls. Ensure links communicate their destination or action. Provide text alternatives for images that carry information and leave decorative images appropriately ignored by assistive technology. Avoid using color alone to communicate status or meaning.

## Make interaction operable Check that all essential functionality can be used with a keyboard, with a visible focus indicator and a sensible focus order. Menus, dialogs, and dynamic updates need careful behavior; custom controls are especially easy to get wrong. Make targets usable on touch devices, and do not impose short time limits without an accessible alternative. Forms should explain errors in text and preserve user input when practical.

## Make content readable Use sufficient contrast, legible type, plain language, and predictable layouts. Support text resizing and zoom without hiding content or requiring horizontal scrolling for ordinary reading. Captions and transcripts make audiovisual content more accessible and useful in noisy or quiet settings. Avoid flashing content that can trigger harm, and give users control over animation where appropriate.

## Test with people and tools Combine automated checks with keyboard testing, screen reader review, zoom, and usability sessions. Test representative templates and complete tasks, not just a home page screenshot. Record findings, severity, owner, and retest status. Accessibility work continues after launch as content and components change. A short recurring review helps catch regressions and makes inclusive design part of ordinary quality assurance.
